Japan's 100-yen coin supply ran critically short. Arcades tripled their floor space to fit more cabinets. In the United States, Atari licensed the game for the 2600 home console — and it became the first "killer app" in history, quadrupling console sales overnight. People bought the hardware just to play this one game.

Bars, restaurants, and bowling alleys converted to dedicated Space Invaders parlors.
This had never happened before. A piece of entertainment software had created a measurable macroeconomic effect. The Japanese government took notice. The world took notice.
